Dude. How cool is this? So ready to zing. Andy Hampsten. Is. The. Shit. Here he is in 1988 dressed for dinner in the Maglia Rosa of the Giro d’Italia – the pink leader’s jersey from the Tour of Italy – ready to rock the time trial.
Hampsten won the race in legendary fashion, launching an attack over the Gavia Pass and solo’ing to take the overall lead through a blizzard. He was the first non-euro to ever win it, is the only American to do so, and was also the first Yankee to win a Grand Tour, any Grand Tour. He would go on to win the Tour of Switzerland twice and then would help one young Greg LeMond to win Le Tour de France, a race where Hampsten would further cement his place in the Peloton of the Cosmos by adding to his palmares with a win up the legendary Alp d’Heuz. I’ve got goosebumps.
